What’s your career highlight to date?
A major moment in my career was becoming Director of Services and Operations at bigmouthmedia. It was a great to be part of a leadership team that led a high-growth, continually scaling agency.
During my time there, we grew from a nine person team in 2003 with £1m revenue, to a £24m international agency with 43% EBITDA in 2010.
bigmouthmedia was then sold to Digitas LBi, in what was the largest deal of its kind at the time.
My experience there gave me the tools to advise all my clients at Waypoint Partners to reach similar levels of growth.
What advice on growth would you give to your younger self?
That’s a great question. Here are key points I think are essential:
- Keep primary focus on the long-term goal and strategy.
- Spend time on the business – especially strategy delivery, and don’t get bogged down in day-to-day issues.
- Acknowledge what you don’t know and be comfortable with that.
- Find a mentor and advisor who knows what it’s like – to be your conscience and provide positive challenge to help you keep on track.
Who was your hero or inspiration growing up?
Sir Alex Ferguson was a constant inspiration in my early years.
I always admired the way he was directly focused on the outcome and was solely driven to deliver success, despite all sorts of challenges in the process.
I’ve always aimed to employ Ferguson’s strong sense of mission and vision as a leader and advisor.
What brought you to Waypoint Partners?
Being a Director at Waypoint is a position I wish was available when I was a young agency leader.
The role is a perfect match for my experience and ambitions to grow agencies through my advice and support.
I love working with agency leaders to help them set their ambitions and achieve their goals. It’s also very rewarding for me to work with like-minded colleagues with vast experience and skillsets to create valuable outcomes for our agency clients.
